Creatures & Christians

Have you noticed the different creatures God likens Christians to? The ones that come to mind are: Lion, Sheep/Lamb & Eagle…and they are not in any particular order.

Proverbs 28: 1 - We’re to be as bold as lions; Jesus is the Lion of the Tribe of Judah

Psalms 23; Psalm 100: 3; John 10: 1-16 – we are the sheep of God’s pasture; Jesus is the Lamb of God as well as our Shepherd.

Now the only one of the three I haven’t seen an exact biblical reference to Jesus is the eagle. God uses this bird to encourage us in so many ways. Have you ever heard of the “place of first mention” principle in Bible study? One of my former pastors taught us about it…He said that the place of first mention on any word or topic in the bible usually sets the context. With that a the back of your mind, let's look and see the first place the word “eagle” was used in the Bible.

Exodus 19:4 You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles' wings and brought you to Myself. (Amplified Bible) Here God likened His deliverance of the Israelites from Egypt to carrying them on eagle wings…wow!!! Moses reiterated this in his song in Deuteronomy 32…

Deuteronomy 32:9 -13: For the Lord's portion is His people; Jacob (Israel) is the lot of His inheritance. He found him in a desert land, in the howling void of the wilderness; He kept circling around him, He scanned him [penetratingly], He kept him as the pupil of His eye. As an eagle that stirs up her nest, that flutters over her young, He spread abroad His wings and He took them, He bore them on His pinions. So the Lord alone led him; there was no foreign god with Him. He made Israel ride on the high places of the earth, and he ate the increase of the field; and He made him suck honey out of the rock and oil out of the flinty rock, (Amplified Bible)

Also consider: Psalm 103:1-5 BLESS (AFFECTIONATELY, gratefully praise) the Lord, O my soul; and all that is [deepest] within me, bless His holy name! Bless (affectionately, gratefully praise) the Lord, O my soul, and forget not [one of] all His benefits-- Who forgives [every one of] all your iniquities, Who heals [each one of] all your diseases, Who redeems your life from the pit and corruption, Who beautifies, dignifies, and crowns you with loving-kindness and tender mercy; Who satisfies your mouth [your necessity and desire at your personal age and situation] with good so that your youth, renewed, is like the eagle's [strong, overcoming, soaring]! (Amplified Bible) The eagle is known to be an overcomer…we should also be known as overcomers.

Four other interesting facts about eagles:
  • Eagles have excellent eyesight, hence the term “eagle eyes”. Likewise when we walk by faith and not by sight (….) we’ll always have excellent eyesight and insight.
  • Eagles remain faithful to their mate “till death do them part”. It goes without saying that that’s how all our marriages should be…
  • Eagles fly high and fast – that’s a combination of a good attitude and altitude
  • Eagles build their nests in tall trees or high cliffs – obviously they choose to live “above” circumstances not “under” them…we can choose to do the same
It just hit me that the 3 creatures referred to can also be seen as representing the Father, Son & Holy Spirit. Isn’t God so amazing - He brings things together when you open your heart to Him and His word…

We’ll talk some more about the traits of an eagle…and move on to the lion and the lamb as God leads us.
